There is no downgrade path from what I can see. Choosing one path may close another option. And there are multiple upgrades that can be performed, limited by the item. You have different types of upgrades you can perform a given item. I like the upgrade system from what little I've seen so far. The links below spawn a slightly scaled image.
When open the images, select the image in the spawned page to see it full size. I haven't ventured very far, so you're just getting a few screen shots around the swamp areas. Not that they were inherently bad, this is simply very cool. I like that much better than the bars in the original game. Note the needles for counters on the main HUD and in the inventory display. The images below are taken with the "Enhanced Settings" aka DX10 enabled at 1920x1200.
